Handpicked Wines are a multi-regional, multi-channel wine brand that came to us with a vision to create a cellar door and wine bar experience in a city location. They engaged us to sense-check their concept and devise a strategy that they could use to shortlist and brief a design team, in this case DesignOffice whose understanding of physical and digital retail made them the logical choice.

The end result of this collaboration is a stunning flagship space on Kensington Street, Sydney. Located in an old brick warehouse, DesignOffice’s chosen palette of solid oak, galvanised metal, leather and granite is at once elegant and approachable. The spacious and relaxed arrangement encourages patrons to walk around and try new wines in the Handpicked Experience Room – where wine can be sampled directly from the barrel – and get cozy with a glass or two. The list features over 40 wines by the glass, with sommelier-hosted wine tastings also available. Wines are categorised into three levels of quality, from everyday to premium, which means there is something for everyone. A charcuterie and cheese menu is designed by Ocello in Surry Hills.

“We want to be complementary to the area. People can come for a tasting before dinner or grab a bottle of wine to BYO in Spice Alley.”
